The justification of beliefs in Leibniz’s late writings
Abstract
Within the framework of «Discourse on the Conformity of Faith to Reason» (Leibniz 1710) and «Of True Mystical Theology» (Leibniz 1697-1698), I analyse how it is possible to justify, according to Leibniz, the knowledge of a «truth superior to reason» (Theodicy § 23) and whether intuition is a possible source of knowledge of such truths. In the light of Plantinga’s (1993, 2000) approach, I present some objections to the thesis according to which there are basic, i.e., foundational, religious beliefs based on intuition. Finally, I consider a possible alternative that revalorizes doxastic practices.
