The man, to be of word
Abstract
Paul Ricoeur distinguishes the sameness of character (idem), from ipseity, the being that remains in the promise, the maintien de soi, which finds its most faithful expression in the imaginary variations of literary fiction. The present work analyzes works not taken into account by Ricoeur, such as Kaspar by Peter Handke, to exemplify the loss of ipseity if there is no dialectical game with a character, a case that is also shown in Musil's Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften. A "dream" by Jorge Luis Borges finally shows the promise fulfilled despite death.
