Evaluation of Chlorhexidine as a Disinfectant in Endodontics: A Literature Review
Abstract
Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a widely used irrigant in endodontics due to its antimicrobial effectiveness and substantivity in root canals. A literature search and analysis was conducted in specialized databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Index Medicus, selecting studies between 2019 and 2024. MeSH terms and Boolean operators were used, including peer-reviewed research, clinical trials, and experimental studies on antimicrobial effectiveness, biocompatibility, and adhesion. Articles in other languages and those with insufficient samples or inconsistent methodologies were excluded. It is concluded that CHX remains relevant in endodontics, but its formulation needs to be optimized to improve its biocompatibility.
