Young Schelling's theory of organism in the light of John Brown. From Erregungstheorie to ursprügliche Duplicität.
Abstract
Schelling's theory of the organism in Erster Entwurf eines Systems der Naturphilosophie (1799) is presented in context. In order to understand it, John Brown's intellectual influence on Schelling must be made explicit. Schelling's reading of Brown's theory of excitability is therefore carefully examined. Here it is shown how, starting from it, the idealist arrived at his own theory of the organism. Thus, starting from Schelling's reading of the Erregungstheorie one arrives at Schelling's theory, which is the ursprüngliche Duplicität as a criterion of demarcation between organic and inorganic life.
